Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, plan, organize, coordinate and implement the daily operations and activities of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC); perform a variety of duties related to assisting Veteran students, the VRC, and its initiatives at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC); act as liaison between the faculty, staff and Veteran students; leads student workers; identifies appropriate tools and resources for the VRC, plans and facilitates workshops and provides Veteran student support as needed.
- Assist Veteran students in removing barriers to their education by acting as the main point of contact to help coordinate Veteran student services, provide referrals, create programming, and advocate for Veteran students with issues related to their military experiences, Veteran benefits and student status.
- Coordinate and address the needs and issues of Veteran students, military members and their dependents such as financial aid, application procedures, and enrollment.
- Help Veteran students transition into the higher education environment;
- Coordinate and facilitate activities for the VRC;
- Establish relationships with agency liaisons in the area that offer support services for Veterans, service members and eligible family members. Partnerships could include the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Am Vets, OEF/OIF Program Managers, VA Medical Centers, VA Regional Office, and others. Refer Veteran students to these available services for further assistance.
- Identify current resource materials, both written and computerized, for inclusion in the VRC. Purchase materials as needed and ensure materials are current. Ensure computer hardware and software is operable.
- Develop and implement marketing strategies for services provided by the VRC;
- Collect and evaluates data on VRC usage. Develop and implement changes based on changing Veteran student needs.
- Design and facilitate workshops focused on such areas as working with the Veteran student populations in a college environment. Work on the oversight of the retention strategies with the faculty and staff. Deliver presentations to classes and external stakeholders as requested.
- Participate in problem solving issues between Veteran students, instructors and/or counselors/advisors. Facilitate Veteran student transition into the college environment.
- Initiate and coordinate the development of grant proposals and solicit donations that support the goals of the VRC.
- Work with Enrollment Services to identify Veteran student needs and verify Veteran student status;
- Assist veteran students with informational and procedural matters;
- Assist in the development, updating and maintaining of policies and procedures regarding the VRC;
- Assist in evaluating the condition of the VRC and furnishings and helping to project future needs;
- Serve as liaison to community and regional organizations that can contribute to the goals of the VRC.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: Experience gained by service in the military or higher education, working in a student support environment and designing and facilitating training for a diverse audience. Plus, experience working with veteran student populations and understanding of military resources available to Veterans.
Knowledge of:
- Student development and developmental issues related to college success
- Laws and regulations relative to Veteran services and student activities
- Student behavior and conduct processes, including safety practices
- Basic accounting principles applied to budget management.
- Customer service practices and techniques.
Ability to:
- Operate standard office equipment, including a computer and related software
- Analyze problems, correct and recommend solutions
- Using initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Organize and prioritize work efficiently
- Develop and maintain a variety of records, data and required reports.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Collaborate and work with community representatives and LTCC administration
- Develop effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
